Santoso, P., Savirani, A., TÓ§rnquist, O., Hiariej, E., Hanif, H., Samadhi, W. P., … Hapsari W. M. (2013). Executive Summary Report: Democracy Baseline Survey 2013–2014. Oslo and Yogyakarta: Power, Welfare and Democracy, Universitas Gadjah Mada and University of Oslo.

An initial executive summary of the Indonesian democracy assessment conducted by PWD in 2013. PWD’s primary objective is to contribute to the democratisation process through academic means. It presents a strategic opportunity that Indonesia cannot afford to miss. Power relations and the link between democracy and welfare are often emphasised in studies of democratisation. Democratic procedures and civil and political rights are important; but they are not enough. It is also necessary to disclose who has the power to control the means or institutions of democracy (the procedures), as well as how they achieve their objectives. The baseline study examines the public and state capacity to implement (without corruption) democratic decisions on fair power relations and welfare measures. It also examines to what extent, and in what way democratic rights and governance contribute (or fail to contribute) to resolving challenges to sustainable and welfare-based economic growth.
